Overview
Mother Teresa was born on the 26th of August 1910, but she
declared that her actual birthday is the date that she was baptised which
was the 27 August 1910. Mother Teresa's parents were Nikola and
Drana Bojaxhiu. The Bojaxhiu family were a very devoted catholic family, and
were involved with the local church. When Mother Teresa was only 8 years old,
her father became very ill and passed away, his cause of death was
unsure. After his death Mother Teresa became very closely connected with her
mother who encouraged her to have a deep commitment to charity. Mother
Teresa attended a convent run primary school and a state run high school
and as a child she would also sing in a catholic choir. When Mother
Teresa was twelve years old she experienced her first calling of a
religious life and six years later when Mother Teresa was 18 years old, she decided that she
wanted to live her life as a nun. Mother Teresa travelled to Ireland and join the Loreto Sisters of Dublin and received the name of Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Therese of Lisieux. In May of 1931, Mother Teresa made her first Profession of Vows and was sent to teach at Saint Mary's High School for Girls. The school was run by the Loreto Sisters and was aimed for the girls from the city's poorest families so they could gain an education. Mother Teresa took her final Profession of Vow in May of 1937 and officially became 'Mother Teresa'. She continued teaching and in 1944 became the principal.
In September of 1946, Mother Teresa had a second calling telling her to leave her life at the school and devote her life to help to poorest of poor. She created the Missionary of Charity in 1950 which is a Roman Catholic Religious Congregation. The missionary runs hospices, homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and also runs soup kitchens, children and family counseling and schools. Mother Teresa passed away on the 5th of September in 1997 at the age of 87.
