The Missionary of Charity is a Roman Catholic Religious Congregation, which was established in 1950 by Mother Teresa, This charity is made up of over 4500 sisters and is running in 133 countries around the world. The members must follow the 4 vows, Chastity, Poverty, Obedience and "Wholehearted and free service to the poorest of the poor". In 1984, brothers were added to a priest branch named "The Missionary of Charity Fathers" which was founded by Mother Teresa and Fr. Joseph Langford. The Missionary of Charity cares for refugees, ex-prostitutes, people who are mentally ill, sick and abandoned children, people with HIV/AIDS and the elderly. The Missionary of Charity also runs schools to educate street children, soup kitchens and community homes.
Mother Teresa established the idea of The Missionary of Charity when she received her second calling in September of 1946. She was on a train trip when Christ connected with her and told her to leave her job as a teacher and live a life dedicated to providing the poorest and sickest people of Calcutta. Mother Teresa believed that this is what she needed to do so went to leave her convent but because she had taken a vow of obedience she was not allowed to leave without permission. Mother Teresa did not get permission until a year and a half later, after her calling. Mother Teresa left the convent and did simple medical training then started her new life in the streets of Calcutta providing and aiding the poor and sick. This is when Mother Teresa created the Missionary of Charity and began supporting people in other towns and also getting other sisters involved to make a bigger impact on the world.
